Springfield has real waterfront. Lake Springfield, on the southeast side of the city, is a reservoir owned by City Water, Light and Power, and many homes sit on its shore. For those lots we supply and fit the metal and fence side of a dock: posts, railings, walk gates at the head of a pier, brackets and fasteners, and fence that runs down toward the water. We do not build boats, boat lifts or marinas.
The owner of the water sets the rules, not the fence company. On Lake Springfield that is the city utility, so ask its lake office what is allowed at your shoreline before you order anything. The Sangamon River north of town floods, and work along it can involve state and county floodplain rules. Lake Petersburg is a private lake with its own association. We build to what that owner or agency approves for your lot.
Water is hard on metal. Wet air, waves and winter ice all work on a dock, so we use aluminum, galvanized steel and stainless fasteners in place of plain steel that would rust within a few seasons. Lake levels drop in a dry summer and ice moves posts in January, and both affect where a railing or gate post can be anchored. We look at the shore and the existing dock before we suggest any parts.
Dock parts in Springfield: common questions
Who approves a dock or railing on Lake Springfield?
City Water, Light and Power owns the lake and its shoreline, so its rules apply. Check with the utility before any work starts.
Do you build whole docks or marinas?
No. We supply and install posts, railings, gates, hardware and fencing for docks, piers and waterfront lots.
What metal holds up best next to the water?
Aluminum and galvanized steel with stainless fasteners. Plain steel rusts quickly in wet air.
