Metal fence comes two ways. Welded steel is made up as rigid sections and suits shops, yards and gated drives where the job is to keep people out. Panel systems in steel or aluminum bolt between posts and go up faster, which fits most Springfield house lots. Both are powder coated, usually in black. Aluminum weighs less and will not rust. Steel resists bending and cutting better, so we suggest it for the street side of a business.
Central Illinois weather helps decide between them. Plows throw salt and slush onto fences along Springfield streets all winter, and that eats a scratched steel finish first. Aluminum shrugs it off. Open pickets also let prairie wind pass through, so a metal fence carries far less load than a solid panel on an exposed lot at the edge of town. After a hail or wind storm, steel holds its shape better when a limb comes down on it.
The ground here is silt loam over clay that swells when wet and heaves with frost. Metal panels have little give, so one lifted post shows as a crooked line. We set every post in concrete below the frost depth, about three feet. Older city lots are narrow and mostly flat, and panels run level. Lots that roll toward a creek, as in parts of Rochester and Leland Grove, need rackable panels that follow the slope without gaps underneath.
Steel & aluminum fences in Springfield: common questions
Is steel or aluminum better for a house in Springfield?
Aluminum for most homes, because road salt and damp ground do not rust it. Pick steel when strength and security matter more.
Can I have pointed pickets on a metal fence at home?
Springfield's zoning ordinance does not allow spikes or sharp points on residential fences. We fit flat or rounded tops on homes.
Will a metal fence need painting?
No. The powder coat is the finish. On steel, touch up any deep scratch so rust cannot start there.
