Most fence repairs cost $300 to $900 in 2026, going by national figures. Small jobs such as a board, a latch or a gate adjustment run $100 to $300. Large ones, with several posts or a section lying on the ground, run $900 to $2,500.
Price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, not our own quotes. Local labor, material prices and the conditions in your yard move the number up or down. Last checked October 2026.

How much does it cost to fix a leaning fence?
The price follows the number of posts that have failed, because posts are what hold a fence upright. One or two posts fall in the standard row of the table. If post after post along a run is loose, rebuilding that run as one job is cheaper than fixing them one visit at a time.
Why is my fence leaning, and can it be fixed without replacing it?
In Springfield a lean usually starts below ground. The soil here is silt loam over clay that stays damp, so wood posts rot where they meet the dirt, and frost lifts footings that were set too shallow. Wind then pushes the weakened line over. When the boards and rails are still solid, new posts are enough and the panels go back up.
How much does it cost to replace a rotted fence post?
By the national figures, one or two posts is a $300 to $900 repair. The job is to dig out the old post with its concrete, set a new one below the frost line and fasten the rails again. Large old footings and tree roots add time.
My gate sags and will not latch. Repair or replace?
Most sagging gates can be repaired. The cause is a hinge post that has tipped, worn hinges, or a frame that has dropped out of square. We straighten or reset the post, brace the frame and reposition the latch. A gate with a rotted or bent frame is replaced.
How much does a contractor charge to fix a broken gate latch?
A latch falls in the minor range, $100 to $300 in the national 2026 figures. Most companies have a minimum charge for coming out, so mention any other loose boards or hardware when you call and have everything done on the same visit.
My fence posts lifted over the winter and the gate will not close. Can they be reset?
Yes, and the fix is to go deeper. Posts lifted by frost heave do not settle back by themselves, and driving them down does not last. We take out the post and its footing and reset it below the frost line, which in central Illinois means roughly three feet down. Your building department can give the official footing depth for your address.
My fence line goes wavy every winter. Is it the soil or a bad installation?
It is the soil acting on posts that are too short. Our ground swells when it is wet and frozen and shrinks back in a dry summer, and a shallow footing rides up and down with it. Posts set below the frost line, with water drained away from the base, stay put in the same soil.
A branch bent my aluminum fence. Do I need a whole new panel?
It depends how the fence was made. Where rails and pickets are separate pieces, the bent ones can be swapped. Where the panel is welded or assembled as a unit, the section is replaced. Send a photo and we can usually say which you have.
